Creating Children’s Books Summer Workshop

Workshop Overview:

Creating Children’s Books Workshop is a fun, interactive program, designed for aspiring young writers and also engaging and challenging for adults. This three-day workshop offers an active learning experience, focused on the art of crafting captivating stories for children. From exploring the fundamentals of storytelling to the stages of book production and publishing, students gain the practical skills to bring imaginative tales to life.

Day 1:

Storytelling with words and pictures

Creating children’s books is a journey to discover the secrets of effective storytelling. Through engaging activities and discussions, we explore the key elements of a compelling children’s story. These include a concept, structure and outline, and character development. Vivid descriptions and creating vibrant story settings. Storyboarding, a valuable technique for visualizing ideas and constructing narratives, will help guide us through elements of the story.

Day 2:

Giving life to the Story, and Book Production

Day two will focus on the process of bringing color and life to the story. When creating children’s books, the story arc and flow, character development and the relationships between characters are all used to enhance the overall plot line. Using storyboard and outline as a guide, we will dive into the practical aspects of book production. Writing and editing manuscript, layout, and creating and incorporating original illustrations that bring out the heart of the story.

Day 3:

Publishing and Book Promotion

While stitching together our book, we’ll look at publishing. Especially KDP which is easy, free, and how we’ll publish our project. We’ll navigate production, including cover design, formatting, the blurb, and printing, and establishing an online presence as aspiring authors.

This workshop is a very hands-on, group project. By the end of the program, new authors will have gained valuable insights into children’s book writing and publishing. They will be equipped with the tools to embark on their own creative journeys with confidence.

The workshop schedule and content can be flexible to allow for that spark of creative genius in us all!
